What a dynamic QR code really costs in 2026 (fine print included)

· 3 min read

Search for "dynamic QR code generator" and open five pricing pages, and you'll see numbers like $5, $9, or $15 a month. What you won't see at first glance: which of those prices are charged as a single annual payment, which deactivate your QR past a scan cap that isn't in the table, and which stop redirecting if you cancel.

We did that homework. Data is from July 2026, taken from each provider's public pricing pages and help centers — it can change, so verify before you buy.

The table pricing pages don't show

Three patterns repeat so often they have names:

1. The hostage QR. They let you generate and print "for free," and 14 days later the QR redirects to a payment page. Your print investment is held hostage: pay the full annual fee or trash the material. It's the number-one complaint in design communities (we covered it in detail here).

2. The "monthly" price that doesn't exist. The page highlights "$9/mo," but at checkout the only available button charges $108–588 at once, non-refundable. For a freelancer who needs a three-month campaign, the real price quadruples.

3. The invisible scan cap. "Unlimited dynamic QRs" — with a clause that cuts the redirect at 50,000 annual scans. If your campaign works too well, the QR dies at its best moment and your customers see an error page.

How to actually compare: 5 questions before printing

  1. Does the free plan expire, or is it permanent?
  2. Can I pay month to month and cancel without penalty?
  3. Is there a scan cap? What exactly happens when I hit it?
  4. What happens to my printed QRs if I cancel?
  5. Is a custom domain on a reasonable plan, or an enterprise privilege?

If the answer to any of these isn't written on their site, assume the worst: this industry has trained its users to discover the restrictions after printing.

Where QR Top stands

Our answers to those five questions, in writing: the free plan is permanent (5 dynamic QRs that never expire), billing is genuinely monthly with one-click cancellation, scans are unlimited on every plan — no clauses — and if you cancel a paid plan your links keep redirecting (we call it the anti-hostage guarantee, and it's in our terms). Custom domains live on the $9/mo Pro plan, not on a $399 tier.

Why can we afford what others charge dearly for? Because redirecting a QR costs pennies; what the industry monetizes with those limits is the fear of your printed material going dead. We'd rather you pay for what's actually worth paying for: analytics, branded domains, and teams.
